2024

As 2023 winds down we hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season.
BCFNS wishes you all the best in the new year and we look forward to 2024!

CHRISTMAS CHEER AND MORE . . .
Christmas party

When Christmas was fast approaching, most of the BCFNS Board and several active volunteers gathered on December 13th for a well-deserved party. Everyone chipped in with goodies for all to enjoy. Board Members, Wayne, Vicki, and Bob congratulated the group on the past year's accomplishments and highlighted challenges for the year to come. Bernard Mollberg, a member of the BCFNS Presentation Team, pulled out his banjo, and led everyone in an original night sky sing-along song that he wrote just for the occasion. Larry Wells, President of our sister group of night sky advocates, the Comal County Friends of the Night Sky, showed up in one of our BCFNS "Deep in the Dark of Texas"™ T-shirts. That was a good reminder that this shirt and sweatshirt, as well as T-shirts for the upcoming Total Eclipse of the Sun on April 8th, are available on our website. They will make great souvenirs! You can order these T-shirts by going to the My Texas Gifts section of our website at: Order Your T-Shirts Here

BCFNS THIRD ANNUAL POETRY CONTEST

ME NEITHER
by Bob Heinonen

Ever write a poem you didn’t have to defend
Because your mind just doesn’t have that kind of bend?

Me neither.

Ever thought up a silly limerick
That someone didn’t kick
Or hit with a stick
Because you couldn’t pick
Something that rhymed with kick?

Me neither.

Now if I could only write a poem that talked about our night sky
Oh, well, I think I’ll just have a cup of coffee and a piece of cherry pie.
Sigh!

What a sad way to start our 2024 BCFNS Facebook Group Poetry Contest. Fortunately, Bob cannot enter this poem in the contest because he is our Facebook Group Administrator, but you can enter one.

Anyone who is a member of our Facebook Group or joins our Facebook Group may enter a poem, of any type, in the contest. For all the rules and entry dates, go to our Facebook Group page and click on Featured. Or you can email us for a copy of the rules at Facebook Admin

PRESENTATION TEAM NEWS

Seven class presentations for 6th grade Science and 8th grade Ecology students at Blanco Middle School were done on three different days in December. Teacher Susan Villareal had asked BCFNS to do a presentation to each of her classes and, of course, the Presentation Team accommodated.

Bernard Mollberg

Bernard Mollberg, who was recently promoted from "Fiddler Of The Night Sky" to "Musician Of The Night Sky" because of his multi-instrument skills, was the Master Of Ceremonies. In a multi-faceted science program designed to maintain the attention of the students, the Musician Of The Night Sky demonstrated “vibration” using the Jaw Harp.

PowerPoint

Bob Heinonen, as the Wizard Of The Night Sky, in his normal grumpy mood, gave a 25 minute PowerPoint presentation relating to the problems and cures of light pollution.

Wizard Of The Night Sky

If you would like a presentation for your group or class, the Presentation Team can do either adult or student programs. The programs are free of charge and can be done for an audience of 5 or more people in Blanco County. Contact us at Bookings

______________________________________________________________ THE SKY IS GETTING BRIGHTER - WE NEED YOUR HELP!

You may remember that there is a way to measure darkness. We have two teams of volunteers who go out at night twice a year, during the time of the new moon, to various per-determined locations to measure the darkness. In mid-December the readings were not good.

Our president, Wayne Gosnell, had this to say, “Wow! And a big MOAN to go with it. Every one of these SQM-L night sky readings are worse than the 2007 baseline. This is a wake-up call. We're losing ground! Thank you, David Loose and Elizabeth Miller, for getting these readings! Disturbing though they are, they are desperately needed to lay out a long-term plan to deal with the loss of our dark sky.”

David Loose tells us that “we have to remember, as long as Austin/Dripping Springs and San Antonio/Boerne are increasing in population, our skies will be getting brighter! Light pollution comes from far away as well as from downtown Blanco, and population drives pollution up no matter what! Our mission should be to minimize what we can and spread the word to surrounding communities to do the same. We are on the cusp of both Hill Country growth and its inevitable light pollution.”

"Deep in the Dark of Texas"™ is the theme that the BCFNS Board has chosen for 2024. Our goal for this next year will be to convince more individuals and businesses to have better control of their outdoor lighting so that we can indeed continue to live "Deep in the Dark of Texas"™ free from light pollution.

You can help us achieve this goal by spreading the word. Talk to your friends, neighbors, and the businesses you frequent about adjusting their lighting to be night sky friendly. It really is very simple; we just need to educate folks. If you would like some of our brochures to pass out just let us know. Also, watch our social media posts for information you can share with others. We also hope to have some educational gatherings to assist you in becoming better informed about how to speak to others about saving our night sky.

Wayne has a mantra to which he has added a warning: “Enjoy the night (while you still can)”.
