Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky

About Us

Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky is an association of neighbors who want to protect our view of the stars at night. We think there's a good story to tell and something of value to protect. Most of us have lived in the county for a number of years or can trace our roots back to its beginnings.

We understand why people want to live here and we're happy they want to come. But we think it is possible to welcome these newcomers and at the same time protect the beauty of the place to which they are coming. And one of the key beauties of the Hill Country is the night sky and its wild proliferation of stars.

Our goal is to help people realize the benefits to be gained by proper management of outdoor lighting. We work with the county government, city governments, Chambers of Commerce, developers, and individuals in a cooperative effort designed to lead by example and suggestion. We believe that retaining our view of the stars, even in the face of development, is central to maintaining Blanco County as a truly outstanding place to live. In our few years of existence, we have accomplished a great deal. Check out our list of accomplishments.

OUR VISION

Where we want to be in 10 years:

  1. Night sky darkness has improved by 10% at the zenith.
  2. Sky glow has reduced from metropolitan areas in surrounding counties.
  3. Johnson City, Round Mountain, and Hye have become recognized as International Dark Sky Communities.
  4. Best Practices for Dark Sky have been coordinated with Blanco County Conservation Initiative.
  5. Work with DarkSky International to make Blanco County a Dark Sky Region.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
